A Helping Hand for Haiti

The tragic earthquake in Haiti has been catastrophic for the people who live and work there. The images of families and children now living in the streets because their homes have been destroyed are heart-wrenching.

Preschoolers and staff members at the Primrose School at West Lake were inspired to make a difference and planned a fundraiser called “Helping Hands for Haiti”. The Primrose staff prepared spaghetti dinners-to-go for Primrose families and friends to purchase on February 4th. The brownie desserts were ‘homemade’ by Primrose preschool students.

Primrose sold 233 dinners, 137 brownies, and 46 pieces of cake to raise $2,657. The Primrose School at West Lake owners, Rhonda and Elliott Blades, personally matched the first $1500 from the fundraiser for a total contribution of $4,157 to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief.

“Children who learn these values at an early age develop into caring, generous adults who love their community and respect others,” says Rhonda Blades. “The tragedy in Haiti gives our preschoolers a chance to lend their support to children who are in desperate need. Our children become more aware of the world around them and how they help in small ways to improve the life of others.”

This hands-on ‘Caring and Giving’ activity illustrates just one of the many ways Primrose promotes character development among its students. The Primrose Balanced Learning® curriculum combines the two leading philosophies in early childhood education – teacher-directed and child-initiated learning – with a balance of academics, character development and play.

Primrose Schools’ Caring and Giving program helps students understand the value of generosity and creates a hands-on approach to making a difference in the world.
